A lawn in a small San Francisco garden is often the least rewarding thing in it: it drinks water, it needs mowing, it stays damp under the marine layer, and it gets used for nothing in particular. A bocce court is an interesting swap. It occupies a similar footprint, needs no irrigation at all, and turns an unused strip into the part of the garden people actually stand in.
Done thoughtfully it is also a genuinely sustainable piece of hardscape - which is not something you can say about most paving.
Why a court can be the green option
Three things work in its favour:
- No irrigation. Crushed oyster shell, decomposed granite and gold fines need no water at all. Synthetic turf needs none either. In a city where summer water use is a live issue, replacing a thirsty lawn with a court removes a demand rather than adding one.
- It can be built permeable. Rain that falls on a properly built court soaks into the base and into the ground rather than running off into the storm system. That is the opposite of what a concrete patio of the same size does.
- No mowing, no fertiliser, no weekly machine time. Maintenance is periodic raking and topping up.
The catch is that "permeable" is a build decision, not an automatic property. You have to specify it.
Building it to soak rather than shed
The layered construction a court uses is already close to a soakaway, which is convenient.
Under the playing surface sits a 3 to 4 inch layer of 3/4 inch crushed drain rock and decomposed granite, compacted flat. Below that is a sub-base, typically somewhere in a 4 to 18 inch range depending on the soil. That combined profile holds a useful volume of water in the voids between stones and lets it percolate down instead of running off.
Where drainage is tighter, a pervious concrete base is an option: it runs at something like 15 to 25 percent voids with flow rates around 480 inches per hour, which is far more than any rainfall event will deliver. That turns the court into a small piece of on-site stormwater infrastructure.
San Francisco soils vary a lot by district - sand in the western neighbourhoods, fill and clay elsewhere - so the honest answer on infiltration is that it has to be checked on site, not assumed.
The fog factor
The marine layer is a real design input. Gardens on the west side of the city stay damp for long stretches, and surfaces dry slowly.
That pushes a few decisions:
- Favour free-draining surfaces. Oyster shell and decomposed granite shed surface water quickly and dry faster than a dense surface would.
- Take drainage seriously even though rainfall is modest. Persistent damp, not downpours, is what encourages moss and algae on a shaded city court.
- Think about light. A court against a north-facing fence between two tall buildings will stay green with algae. A lighter surface such as crushed oyster shell both reads brighter and shows the problem earlier.
Short courts for small gardens
Almost no San Francisco garden takes a full 60 to 90 foot court. It does not matter. Courts are regularly built from about 30 feet by 5 feet upward, and a short court plays a real, competitive social game.
Practical points for a city yard:
- Run the court along the longest available line, usually straight down the garden from the back of the house.
- Leave standing room at each end and a walking strip along one side - the court plus its clearance is what has to fit, not the court alone.
- A border of pressure-treated board around 4 to 12 inches high contains the surface and doubles as an informal bench edge in a garden with nowhere else to perch.
Access is the hidden constraint
This is the part that surprises people. In a city terrace or a flat with a rear garden, there may be no vehicle access at all. Every cubic yard of excavated soil leaves by wheelbarrow through the house or the side return, and every ton of drain rock comes in the same way.
That does not stop the project, but it changes it: it lengthens the programme, it raises the labour component, and it makes the excavated volume worth calculating early. A 30 x 6 ft court cut a foot deep is roughly 180 cubic feet - about seven cubic yards - of material to move by hand. Worth knowing before you commit.
Choosing the greenest surface
- Crushed oyster shell - a by-product material, light, permeable, no irrigation. The most traditional and arguably the most sustainable choice.
- Decomposed granite / gold fines - natural stone, permeable, no water, blends with planting.
- Synthetic turf - zero water and zero mowing, but it is a plastic product with an end-of-life question. Reasonable where the space must double as a play lawn, less obviously "green" than the mineral surfaces.

Who builds bocce courts in the Bay Area
If you want it built as a permeable system rather than just a flat area of gravel, use someone who works with permeable paving as a specialism.
